Carmel Greeder (Eastman)

July 13, 2016

Shawn's 50th Birthday would have been July 17, 2016. In his memory, I made a trip to Mahtomedi today, found Lakeside Floral and paid forward something Shawn did for me many moons ago. You see, on April 15, 1983 (due to a large snowstorm that closed Mahtomedi schools on April 14), I received a delivery during band class of a dozen beautiful long stem red roses with a card that said "From Me" for my Sweet 16th Birthday. I was so stunned that I did not know at the time who "Me" was. I called Lakeside Floral to see if they could help me figure it out and was told that a "young gentleman came in with a glass jar full of coins and counted them out on the counter in order to pay for them." My heart melted, and in that moment, I knew it was Shawn. You see, shortly before this, Pastor John Carlson was told by Shawn's Mom that Shawn could not attend anymore St. Andrews activities until Shawn cleaned his room, so John had myself, I believe it was Julie Regal (Kamps) and Steve Kopesky go over to Shawn's house while he was not home and clean his room. While cleaning, we found hundreds of coins around Shawn's room and we put them all in a glass jar. The next time I saw Shawn at school, he would not look at me or talk to me! He was truly angry that we had cleaned his room. The roses told me he forgave me. I don't know any significance of the number 3 to Shawn or his family, but it happened to be exactly 33 years, 3 months and 3 days ago (from July 18, 2016 because flowers are not delivered on Sunday) that Shawn had those roses delivered. In honor of what would have been Shawn's 50th Birthday, and with the fondest of memories of their wonderful son, I sent a dozen long stem red roses to Valerie and Brien (his Mom and Dad) that will be delivered a day late, but with prayers of peace in knowing that Shawn will not soon be forgotten.
